🏆 More Than a Game: The Legacy That Drives Us
At Hoops and Health Alliance, we often say we're not just building athletes — we're building leaders. That belief is deeply rooted in legacy.
This photo, taken over 20 years ago, shows a young Rick Smith — now our Vice President — standing proudly with his teammates on the original DC Blue Devils basketball team. You’ll spot him in the third row from the bottom, far left, standing behind his father, Raymond Smith.
The Blue Devils weren’t just focused on winning games. They were a brotherhood. With Rick's godfather Rob Jackson and his father Raymond coaching, the team became a powerful mix of mentorship, structure, and purpose.
Coach Jackson and Coach Smith emphasized discipline, consistency, and compassion. Together, they created an environment where young men didn’t just learn basketball — they learned life skills. Lessons on accountability, resilience, and character shaped who they became.
For Rick, the impact was personal. Basketball became more than a game. It was a tool for growth, a guidepost for future goals.
“I knew from that moment I wanted to give that same experience to the next generation — not just the game, but the life lessons that come with it.” — Rick Smith
🎯 Carrying the Legacy Forward
That experience planted the seed for Hoops and Health Alliance. Today, our mission reflects the same values Rick grew up with: empower youth, build leaders, and support whole-person wellness.
Through Align & Move, our athletes grow in confidence, focus, and strength. They learn to show up, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.
Our Eat to Align program fuels that growth. We teach families how food choices affect performance, energy, and overall health. We make nutrition relatable, accessible, and part of everyday life.
This trio — movement, mentorship, and meals — works together to equip kids for success.
🧠 One Moment at a Time
Leadership doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built over time — through practices, encouragement, and small wins that add up.
That’s why we focus on consistency. Each game, each Fuel Bag, and each check-in with a mentor matters.
We’ve seen what happens when youth feel seen. They start to believe in themselves. They begin leading by example. They become confident, capable contributors to their communities.
🔥 Purpose Over Points
Our work honors the coaches who came before us. Men like Rob Jackson and Raymond Smith used basketball as a platform to reach hearts and change futures.
That legacy lives on through every Hoops and Health Alliance program. It shows up in game-day huddles, after-practice talks, and shared meals that fuel more than just bodies.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about the wins.
It’s about the why.
